DMACC Baseball Team Takes Three of Four Games from ICCC

Freshman Sean Moore of Coralville hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team tallied another run on a wild pitch later in the inning to come away with a 2-0 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in the second game of a doubleheader April 24 at the DMACC baseball field.

The win gave the 10th-ranked Bears three wins in the four game series. DMACC was victorious by scores of 4-3 and 9-0 in a pair of games on April 23 before dropping a 3-1 decision to ICCC in the first game on April 24.

The Bears improved to 33-13 overall and maintained their lead in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) at 12-4. Southeastern Community College (SECC) is second in the league with a 13-7 record and Kirkwood Community College (KCC) is third at 10-6.

Freshman Colin Keefe of Woodbury, Minn., had a pair of base hits to lead DMACC in the game. Freshmen Blake Schmit of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Gabby De Varona of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and sophomore Sean Borman of Minnetonka, Minn., contributed one hit apiece.

Freshman Austin Urban of Johnstown, Penn., went the distance to pick up his third win of the season against four losses. Urban allowed just three hits and struck out five.

ICCC’s Andrew Redman allowed six hits and struck out eight to help the Tritons win the first game on April 24. Schmit accounted for two DMACC hits with a pair of singles and De Varona drove in the Bears’ only run with a base hit in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Drew Freie of Wilton pitched the first six innings and suffered his second loss of the season against three wins. Freie allowed three runs on six hits, struck out eight and walked three.

De Varona hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift DMACC to its 4-3 win in the first game on April 23. Schmit began the inning with a base hit and moved to second when sophomore John Loeffler of Burnsville, Minn., drew a base on

balls. Freshman Hebraim Cordova of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for De Varona, who had two of DMACC’s four hits in the game.

Sophomore Ryan Torgerson of Johnston worked the first six innings and came away with his sixth win of the season against four losses. Torgerson allowed three runs on six hits, struck out six and walked two. Freshman Brandon Peterson of Savage, Minn., retired all three batters he faced in the top of the seventh to earn his fifth save.

Cordova had two hits and drove in three runs and freshman Alec Crawford of Wilton pitched a three-hitter as the Bears took the second game on April 23, 9-0. Cordova had a two-run home run in the first inning and singled in another run in the bottom of the fourth when DMACC scored four runs. Schmit had three hits and two RBIs in the game.

Crawford went the distance for his eighth win of the season against one loss. He struck out five and walked two.

DMACC travels to Muscatine on April 26 to face Muscatine Community College.
