DMACC Baseball Players Drafted & Named to Post-Season Teams

Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball player Scott Schebler of Solon has been selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 26th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.

Former DMACC players Cole Nelson and Patrick Cooper were also selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. Nelson, a 6’ 7” pitcher from Edina, MN, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round (313 overall pick). Cooper, a pitcher from Danville, KY, was selected also by the Tigers in the 14th round (433 overall pick). Nelson is now playing for Auburn University, while Cooper is playing for Bradley University.

Scott Schebler and teammate Joel Hutter of Bettendorf have been named to the 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II All-American Team. Hutter was named to the All-American First Team, while Schebler was named to the Second Team.

A total of 12 DMACC baseball players have received post-season honors this year. Schebler, Hutter, Ryan Torgerson of Johnston, Nick Anderson of Boone, Jerrod Eigsti of Eureka, MN, Drew Freie of Wilton and Hector Ponce of Puerto Rico were named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) All-Region First Team.

Brad Lamberti of Altoona, Brashad Johnson of New Hope, MN and George Jensen of Eagan, MN were named to the All-Region Second Team. Sean Borman of Minnetonka, MN and Greg Larpenter of Urbandale were named to the All- Region Honorable Mention Team.

Schebler was also named the ICCAC Player of the Year. Torgerson was named the ICCAC Pitcher of the Year.

In addition, Schebler, Hutter, Anderson, Torgerson and Eigsti were named to the All-North Plains District Team.

ScheblerSchebler, a freshman outfielder, led the DMACC Bears in hitting with a .446 average, runs scored (81), home runs (20), slugging percentage (.877) and walks (30). He was second on the team in hits with 91, doubles (22), triples (3) and RBI (82).

In addition, Schebler’s .446 batting average was the fifth best in DMACC history and his .877 slugging percentage was the second highest ever among DMACC players.

Schebler recorded 27 multiple hit games and 24 multiple RBI contests for the Bears in 2010. His 19-game hitting streak was tied for the tops among DMACC Bears players. Schebler started all 58 games for the Bears this season.

HutterHutter, a sophomore third baseman, led the DMACC Bears in hits (92), doubles (24), RBI (89), at-bats (214) and sacrifice flies (7). He was second on the team in runs (80) and total bases (160). Hutter’s offensive statistics this year rank among the all-time best at DMACC. Hutter’s 89 runs batted in smashes the all-time single season record of 79 set last year. His 214 at-bats this year are the eighth highest in team history. His 92 hits are the third best on the all-time DMACC single season record book and his 80 runs scored are the fourth best. The 24 doubles hit by Hutter in 2010 are the second best in DMACC history.

Hutter is now the all-time career leader at DMACC in hits (181) and RBI (163) and is second in doubles (45), runs scored (158) and at-bats (445). He is also third on the career most times hit by a pitch (23) list.

Hutter had a total of 31 multiple hit games and 23 multiple RBI games for the Bears in 2010.

TorgersonTorgerson, a 6’ 2” freshman pitcher, had a 9-1 record and a 4.57 earned run average in 11 appearances for the DMACC Bears in 2010. Torgerson’s nine wins tied for the team high and are just one short of the all-time DMACC record of ten wins in a season.

Torgerson had 64 strike outs in 67 innings pitched giving up only 10 walks. His 1.34 walks allowed per nine innings ranks as the fourth best in DMACC single season pitching history. His 67 innings on the mound this year rank as the tenth most innings by a DMACC pitcher in a season. Opponents hit .293 off of Torgerson for the season.

AndersonAnderson, a 6’ 0” outfielder, hit .418 with 17 home runs, 76 RBI, 81 hits, 72 runs scored and 150 total bases. He led the team in stolen bases with 11. His .773 slugging percentage ranks as the 10th best in DMACC history. His 72 runs scored this year are the ninth best for a single season at DMACC. Anderson’s 17 home runs place him in a tie for sixth place on DMACC’s all-time single season record book and his 22 homers are the eighth highest for a career. He drove in 76 runs in 2010, which is the 5th highest for a single season. His 110 RBI over the 2009-2010 seasons put him in a tie for seventh on the DMACC career list. Anderson started all 58 games for the Bears this season.

EigstiEigsti, a 6’ 0” sophomore second baseman, hit .40-3 with 50 hits, 33 runs scored, seven home runs, 15 doubles and 32 RBI for the DMACC Bears in 2010. He had a total of 14 multiple hit games and 11multiple RBI games for the Bears in 2010.

FreieFreie, a 6’ 0” freshman pitcher, had a 9-2 record with six saves and a 1.60 earned run average in 21 appearances for the DMACC Bears in 2010. Freie’s nine wins tied for the team high and his six saves led the squad. His 1.60 ERA ranks as the fifth lowest single season ERA in DMACC baseball history. His nine wins are just one short of the all-time DMACC record of ten wins in a season.

Freie gave up only 30 hits with 29 strike outs in 39 1/3 innings pitched. Opponents hit only .205 off of Freie for the season.

PoncePonce, a 5’ 10” sophomore outfielder, hit .378 with a team high 88 runs scored, six home runs, 39 RBI for the Bears. He also was second on the team in steals (10) and led the squad in hit-by-pitches (11). He started 57 games for the Bears in 2010. He scored a total of 117 runs over the past two years for DMACC, which ranks fifth on the all-time career list at DMACC. He was hit-by-pitches a total of 18 times at DMACC, which ranks fourth on the Career HBP list.

LambertiLamberti, a 5’ 11” freshman catcher, hit .357 with six home runs, 11 doubles, 35 runs scored and 34 RBI for the DMACC Bears in 2010. Lamberti had a .626 slugging percentage and a .458 on base percentage.

JohnsonJohnson, a sophomore shortstop, started all 58 games for the Bears this season. He hit .380 with 14 home runs, 82 RBI and 46 runs scored. His eight triples set a single season record and also rank as the third best over a two-year career. The 82 runs driven in by Johnson this season is tied for the second highest ever by a DMACC player in a single season. Johnson also recorded 148 total bases and a .712 slugging percentage. Johnson recorded 24 multiple RBI games, which was the best on the 2010 team. He also had 25 multiple hit games for the Bears.

Johnson is among the career leaders in several categories for the DMACC Bears. His 438 at-bats are the third highest in DMACC history and his 160 career hits place him fourth on the all-time list. He hit 26 home runs during his two-year stint at DMACC. That ranks him fourth best at DMACC. His 147 career RBI are the third highest at DMACC.

JensenJensen, a 6’ 4” sophomore pitcher, had a 5-1 record with a 3.77 earned run average in 13 appearances for the DMACC Bears in 2010. Jensen had 30 strike outs in 57 1/3 innings. Opponents hit .298 against Jensen this year. In DMACC career statistics, Jensen’s 3.19 walks allowed per nine innings is the tenth lowest among DMACC pitchers.

BormanBorman, a 6’ 2” freshman first baseman, hit .340 with 12 home runs, including five in one game, for the DMACC Bears in 2010. Borman drove in 44 runs, including 12 in a single game earlier this season, for the DMACC Bears in 2010.

LarpenterLarpenter, a 5’ 9” freshman outfielder, hit .320 with six home runs, 58 runs scored, 31 RBI and 13 doubles for the DMACC Bears in 2010.

The DMACC Bears finished with a 47-11 record. 20-4 in the conference and won a third straight Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Championship.
