General Information

Welcome to my website!  My name is Lisa Speicher and I teach Sociology at DMACC.  I am originally from Iowa, and have been back here since 2001 after living in Chicago for a couple years.  I started my post-secondary education at DMACC Urban Campus and have since earned a Master’s degree in Sociology from Loyola University Chicago.  My master’s research was on immigration and identity, and my master’s paper is entitled The Everyday Lives of Bosnian Refugee Children in an After-School Program.

I have been teaching at DMACC since Fall 2001.  I am at Urban and West campuses every semester, and have also taught at the Ankeny campus.  I teach SOCY 101 (Introduction to Sociology) and SOCY 105 (Race, Ethnic, and Gender Relations) every semester.  In addition, I regularly teach SOCY 103 (Courtship, Marriage, and Family).  I have also taught SOCY 102 (Social Problems) and may do so again in the future.

My areas of interest in Sociology include Race and Gender Relations, Immigration Policy and Experiences, the Sociology of Health and Medicine, and the Sociology of Language and Culture.  In graduate school, I was trained in ethnography and enjoy fieldwork as a method of sociological research.  I try to stay active in the academic side of the discipline by attending conferences, reading current literature, and having contact with colleagues at various colleges and universities.  In April, 2004, I am presenting a paper at the Midwest Sociological Society’s annual meetings.  The paper, Dreaming of Driver’s Licenses, Bank Accounts, and Honeymoons:  The Everyday Lives of Undocumented Immigrants in the United States, is based on interviews and everyday interaction with undocumented Hispanic immigrants in the Des Moines area.  To read the abstract of the paper, click here.
