OBJECTIVES:

This course will introduce the student to the basic elements of electronic commerce. It will focus on business and technical issues faced by a company that enters into the e-commerce marketplace. Topics include business structures, formats, methods of implementation, products, resource requirements, third party options, technical and operational issues as well as legal and social issues facing a business that engages in electronic commerce.

I. ATTENDANCE:

This class schedule includes classroom time for the presentation and discussion of material. Students are expected to have completed any assigned readings in preparation for class and be prepared to discuss the assigned material. Attendance is encouraged and expected.

The primary focus of this class is the in class discussion and evaluation of E-Commerce topics.  Your attendance and participation will be a factor in your course performance.  

II. CLASS PROJECTS:

  • There will be 4-7 writing assignments/projects throughout the course.  
  • Assignments will be available from the Instructors website.
  • Each assignment will be given a DUE DATE when assigned.
  • Each assignment will be worth 100 points.

  • Students are encouraged to assist each with projects but are expected to do their own work. Joint projects and any work copied from another person will not be tolerated and will be given a ZERO score.
  • Any writing assignment/project received after the due date without prior discussion with the instructor will be reduced by 20%. 

III. CURRENT EVENTS:

  • Each student will be expected to write a short description of THREE/FOUR current events during the course of the semester.  One for each month of the semester.  
  • Students are encouraged to bring newspaper or magazine articles, videos, and personal experiences related to electronic commerce to class for group discussion.
  • Assignments may be related to current events as they arise during the semester.

  • Each current event will be worth 25 points.  
  • You may earn 5 extra credit points by presenting your event to the class.  
  • A current event is due by the last day of class each month.  
  • An event turned in past the last day of the month without prior discussion with the instructor will not be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.

IV. CLASS PARTICIPATION:

  • Each student is encouraged and expected to participate in the classroom discussions.  
  • This will be based upon your use of current events, contribution to classroom discussions and topics, material you bring to class for discussion or support of a topic.  
  • Your participation efforts are directly linked to you attendance.  
  • You will receive a Class Participation grade worth  30% of  your overall course grade.  

V. FINAL PROJECT

  • This course may feature a Final comprehensive written paper.  The paper will focus on a business case study where you will act as an E-Commerce business consultant.  You will evaluate the business to determine how to best implement E-Commerce concepts into their business.  You will also propose and discuss your recommendations in support of your paper.  
  • The final project could also incorporate a 3-5 minute presentation to be made to the class.  
  • The Final Project will make up 30% of your overall course grade. 
  • The Final Project will be due by the last day of class. 

VI: COURSE GRADE:

The Final Course grade will be determined by combining your grades based upon the following: 
  • Class Participation:   30%  
  • Current Events:         10%
  • Class Projects            30%
  • Final Project:             30%            

The grading scale is as follows: 90% AND ABOVE = A, 80% to 89% = B, 70% to 79%= C, 60% to 69 = D, 59% AND BELOW = F.   Pluses and minuses will be used at the instructor's discretion.

VII. CHEATING AND PLAGIERISM

Engaging in any form of cheating or plagiarism on an assignment, test, quiz or project will result in a ZERO grade for that particular assignment. These acts are considered academic misconduct by the college and various disciplinary actions may be taken.

VIII.     This syllabus is tentative and the instructor reserves the right to make changes during the 
            course of the semester.
