Fifth-ranked DMACC Women Beat Grand View JV to Improve to 5-0

November 18, 2010

Sophomore Katlyn Wood of Monroe led three players in double figures with 15 points as the fifth-ranked Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s basketball team defeated the Grand View University junior varsity 83-38 Nov. 16 at the DMACC gymnasium.

Wood made five of seven shots from the field and was five of six at the free throw line. She grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked one shot as the Bears improved to 5-0 for the season. Freshman Carrie Wood of Norwalk added 12 points for DMACC and sophomore Caitlin Axland of Irwin contributed 10 points.

DMACC, which was unranked in the preseason poll by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), was fifth in this week’s poll after winning its first four games. Kirkwood Community College, the Bears’ top rival in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) leads the rankings.

Katlyn Wood scored 11 points in the first half as DMACC took a 41-16 lead into halftime and coasted to the win. The Bears made just 28 of 73 shots from the field, but were 23-of-30 from the free throw line as the Vikings committed 24 fouls in the contest. Twelve DMACC players saw action in the game and all 12 scored. Eight DMACC players scored six or more points.

DMACC will play in the Kirkwood Classic Nov. 19-20 at Cedar Rapids. The Bears will play John Wood Community College at 4 p.m. on Nov. 19 and will face Mineral Area College at 2 p.m. on Nov. 20. Neither DMACC opponent is ranked in the NJCAA poll.
