The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s volleyball team rebounded from three consecutive losses at the Kirkwood Tournament last weekend with a 3-0 win Wednesday night against Southeastern Community College.
Game scores were 25-14, 25-22, 25-5 as the Bears leveled their 2010 record at 6-6 and remained unbeaten at home with a 3-0 record. DMACC is 2-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.
“This was a good win to have,” said DMACC coach Patty Harrison.
DMACC was led by sophomore Mikayla Overturf of Nora Springs with eight kills, five ace blocks and seven digs. Freshman Maggie Vondrak of Sioux City add seven kills and six digs and Erin Smith of Ames contributed three blocks.
“Mikayla Overturf is just playing lights out,” Harrison said. “She is a good player.”
The Bears got 23 assists and three ace serves from sophomore Natalie Weis of Bettendorf and Meaghan Daley of Dike also had three ace serves.
DMACC coasted in the first game, opening up leads of 9-1 and 14-4 before posting the 25-14 win. Southeastern kept the second game close until DMACC pulled away at the end and the Bears were never challenged in the third game as they grabbed a 17-3 advantage to all but put the match out of reach.
Harrison said she switched Smith, a right-side hitter, to middle hitter and moved freshman Elizabeth Ihnen of Sheldon to the right side and that the paid immediate dividends.
“Liz does a really good job of hitting,” Harrison said. “For now she’s going to be solid on that right side. She needs to be on the floor.”
DMACC plays in the Marshalltown tournament this weekend at Marshalltown.
