DMACC Runners Finish Second at Marshalltown Invitational

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s cross country team finished second to North Iowa Area Community College at the Marshalltown Invitational Saturday at Marshalltown. The Bears scored 39 points and finished 21 points behind NIACC.

Freshman Katie Clark of Gilbert led the Bears with a fifth-place finish overall and a fourth-place finish in the team competition. Her time was 21 minutes, 41.80 seconds. Clark was one of four DMACC runners to finish in the top 10. Kari Sylvester of Bondurant finished sixth in 23:45.68, Nyayang Toang was Des Moines was eighth in 25:05.26, and Kelsie Jo Van Kooten of Pella was ninth in 25:23.39. Sylvester finished seventh overall and Toang and Van Kooten were 10th and 11th respectively.

“Nyayang Toang ran her best time of the season and Kelsie Jo Van Kooten, who has been running on a bad knee, showed a great deal of courage and helped the team,” DMACC coach Jim Dose said. “Jeavenia Jones improved her time by almost five minutes and Maria Melendez ran her best time of the year as she continues to improve.”

Jones, who finished in 27: 21.84, and Melendez, who was timed in 31:02.22, were 12th and 13th respectively in the team competition and 16th and 18th respectively in the overall competition.

NIACC’s Kalyn Kruckenberg was the overall winter in 19:29.26.

DMACC travels to Waverly on Oct. 9 for the Dan Huston Invite.
