DMACC Women Finish Tenth at Les Duke Invitational
September 13, 2010
Competing against 10 four-year schools and one other community college team, the DMACC women’s cross country team finished 10th at the Les Duke Invitational Saturday at Grinnell.
The Bears scored 360 points and finished six points ahead of Southwestern Community College, the only other two-year school in the field.
“Our kids competed hard and did a pretty good job,” DMACC coach Jim Dose said. “It was a 6K race as opposed to the 5K races we have run so far this season and that made it a little more difficult.”
Freshman Katie Clark led the Bears with a 59th-place finish. Her time was 26 minutes, 63 seconds.
Sophomores Kari Sylvester and Nyang Toang finished 68th and 76th respectively with Sylvester being timed in 28:51 and Toang crossing the finish line in 31:35. Freshmen Jeavenia Jones and Maria Melendez rounded out the DMACC scoring with 78th- and 79-th place finishes respectively. Jones crossed the finish line in 37:54 and Melendez was timed in 41:18.
“We had one girl who couldn’t go to the meet and another one who was injured so the five who ran had to pick up the slack,” Dose said. “The teams that finished ahead of us were all four-year schools so it was a tough day.”
Truman State won the team championship with 54 points. St. Olaf College was second with 56 points. Carleton College’s Simone Childs-Walker took the individual championship with a time of 22:23 and finished two seconds ahead of Dani Dell’orco of Truman State.
