DMACC Women run at Dan Huston Invitational

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women’s cross country team traveled to Waverly on Oct. 9, for the Dan Huston Pre-Nationals Invitational hosted by Wartburg College.

The Bears and North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) were the only two community college teams entered in the 23-team meet. DMACC finished 21st with 699 points and NIACC placed 17th with 414 points.

Freshman Katie Clark of Gilbert led the Bears as she toured in the 6K course in 26 minutes, 51 seconds and placed 113th. Clark’s time set a new school record for a 6K race. DMACC’s Kari Sylvester of Bondurant, Kelsie Jo Van Kooten of Pella and Nyayang Toang of Des Moines also placed in the top 150. Sylvester finished 140th in 30:42, Van Kooten was 144th in 31:25 and Toang finished in 146th place with a time of 32:37.

Wartburg won the team championship with 65 points and Jenny Scherer of St. Norbert College took individual honors with a time of 21:56.

The DMACC women are idle until Oct. 23 when they will compete in Graceland University’s Yellowjacket Classic at Lamoni.
