Freshman Blake Schmit of Eden Prairie, Minn., hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team a 7-5 win over Southeastern Community College of Whiteville, N.C., in an elimination game May 30 at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II World Series in Enid, Okla.
Freshman Waldemar Maldonado of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, set the stage for Schmit with a base hit after the first two batters of the inning had been retired. Schmit, the ninth batter in the DMACC lineup, finished the game with three base hits to go along with two runs batted in.
Freshman Sean Moore of Coralville also had three hits for the Bears and sophomore John Loeffler of Burnsville, Minn., and freshman Gabby De Varona of Pembroke Pines, Fla., joined Maldonado with two hits apiece as DMACC collected 16 hits off two Southeastern pitchers.
Sophomore Greg Larpenter of Urbandale, Loeffler, De Varona and freshman Neil Madsen of Coralville also drove in runs for the Bears.
The win went to freshman Brandon Peterson of Savage, Minn., who pitched one and two-thirds innings. He allowed one hit and struck out three.
Freshman Austin Urban of Johnstown, Penn., started for DMACC and allowed five runs on nine hits. He struck out six and walked four. Sophomore Dylan Thomas of Lakeville, Minn., relieved Urban in the sixth inning and worked two and a third innings. He allowed one hit, struck out three and walked one.
DMACC’s win over Southeastern came after the Bears defeated the University of Connecticut Avery Point, 5-0, in an elimination game on May 29. Freshman Alec Crawford of Wilton set a tournament record with 15 strikeouts to lead DMACC to the win. Crawford allowed five hits and walked four.
The Bears gave Crawford all the runs he needed in the first inning when they scored four times.
De Varona led DMACC with three hits, including a home run, and Loeffler added a pair of base hits, including a double. De Varona and freshman Colin Keefe of Woodbury, Minn., drove in two runs apiece.
DMACC opened tournament play with a 9-1 loss to Jones County Junior College on May 28. The Bears scored their only run in the first inning and then were shut out by sophomore Andrew Pierce, who scattered nine hits, struck out five and walked two.
The game was called because of the eight-run rule after Jones County scored in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead 9-1.
Freshman Hebraim Cordova of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, sophomore Sean Borman of Minnetonka, Minn., and Schmit paced DMACC with two hits each. Loeffler drove in DMACC’s only run.
Sophomore Ryan Torgerson of Johnston started for the Bears and suffered the loss. He allowed four runs on nine hits and walked five batters. Sophomore Drew Freie of Wilton surrendered five runs on six hits while working an inning and a third.
DMACC was scheduled to play Western Oklahoma State College (WOSC) in an elimination game later today. The Bears opened the 2011 season with a three-game series against WOSC and won two of the three games.
